How Do You Get Your TV Remote to Control Your Wall-Mounted Soundbar? HDMI CEC Explained for GTA Homeowners
HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) is the setting that lets a single TV remote control your wall-mounted soundbar's volume, power, and input switching. To activate it, connect the soundbar to the TV's HDMI ARC or eARC port, then enable CEC in both devices' settings — Samsung calls it Anynet+, LG calls it SimpLink, Sony calls it BRAVIA Sync. Once both sides are on, the TV remote's volume buttons route to the soundbar automatically, and powering off the TV takes the soundbar down with it.
What is HDMI CEC, and why does it matter for a wall-mounted TV and soundbar setup?
HDMI CEC is a communication protocol built into every HDMI cable since version 1.0. It allows connected devices to send and receive control commands — power on, power off, volume up and down, input change — over the same cable that carries audio and video. For a wall-mounted TV paired with a soundbar, CEC is what makes the one-remote experience possible: pick up the TV remote and both devices respond.
Without CEC active, the soundbar operates as a completely separate device. You turn on the TV, reach for the soundbar remote to wake it, adjust the volume independently, then grab the soundbar remote again when the show ends. With CEC working, none of that is necessary. The soundbar comes on with the TV, the TV remote volume buttons adjust soundbar output only, and a single power-off shuts everything down. For a wall-mounted setup in particular — where the physical soundbar remote may be sitting in a drawer across the room — this matters every day.
Does my setup need to be wired a specific way before CEC will work?
Yes — the soundbar must be connected to the TV's HDMI ARC or eARC port for CEC to function. CEC commands travel over a dedicated pin inside the HDMI connector; without a physical HDMI link between the TV and soundbar, no control signal can pass through, regardless of settings.
Two things to confirm before you touch any menus:
- The HDMI cable runs from the soundbar into the TV port physically labelled ARC or eARC — not any other HDMI input
- You are using a cable rated for High Speed HDMI or better (the cable bundled with most soundbars qualifies; a very old or generic cable may not)
An optical cable does not carry CEC — it's audio only. If your soundbar is currently connected via optical, switching to HDMI ARC is the prerequisite step. Once the ARC cable is in place, CEC settings become meaningful.
How do I turn on HDMI CEC? Brand-by-brand guide
Every major TV brand supports CEC but buries it under a different name in a different menu. Here is where to find it on the most common TVs in GTA and Hamilton homes:
- Samsung: Settings → General → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) → On
- LG: Settings → General → Devices → SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) → On. Also check Settings → Sound → Sound Out is set to HDMI (ARC) Device
- Sony BRAVIA: Settings → Watching TV → External Inputs → BRAVIA Sync Settings → BRAVIA Sync Control → On
- TCL / Hisense / Roku TV: Settings → System → Control Other Devices (CEC) → toggle on
- Apple TV (any brand's TV): Settings → Remotes and Devices → Home Theater Control → On, then set Volume Control to Auto
The soundbar side also needs CEC enabled. On most Samsung HW-series soundbars, hold the Source button on the soundbar itself to enter its settings menu and look for the Anynet+ option. Sony HT-series soundbars carry HDMI CEC under Settings → Audio. On Sonos soundbars, the app's TV setup wizard configures CEC automatically during pairing.
Once both sides are set, do a full power cycle: switch the TV and soundbar fully off (not just standby), then power the TV on first. The TV should detect the soundbar within about 30 seconds and reroute volume control automatically.
What if CEC is enabled but the TV remote still isn't controlling the soundbar?
This is the most common frustration after getting a soundbar mounted, and it nearly always traces to one of four causes:
- Wrong HDMI port. The cable is in a standard HDMI input, not the ARC port. Move it to the labelled port.
- CEC only enabled on one device. Both the TV and the soundbar need CEC active at the same time. Check both sides.
- Audio output not routed to ARC. Even with CEC on, the TV will send volume commands to its internal speakers if the audio output is still set to TV speaker. Go to the TV's Sound Output setting and change it to HDMI ARC, Receiver, or External Speaker — the exact label varies by brand.
- Cross-brand compatibility issue on older hardware. Some TVs made before 2021 have partial CEC implementations that work well within the same brand but not across brands. Sahil at SharpStage has seen this on a handful of GTA installs — usually an older Samsung or Vizio TV paired with a newer soundbar. In those cases, a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi soundbar with its own app tends to be the cleanest long-term path, and he'll flag it during the installation visit.
Does where I mount the soundbar affect whether CEC works?
Placement doesn't affect CEC itself — it's a cable protocol, not line-of-sight. But the HDMI cable route between the TV and soundbar does matter for a clean wall-mounted finish. A few practical notes from GTA installs:
Standard ARC and CEC work reliably on HDMI runs up to about 5 metres. Most wall-mounted TV and soundbar setups in GTA homes — detached houses in Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Hamilton, Whitby, and Stoney Creek, as well as condos across Toronto, Mississauga, and Brampton — use cable runs well under 2 metres from the TV input down to the soundbar shelf, so signal quality is not a concern.
For in-wall cable routing in drywall-stud homes, the HDMI cable needs to carry a CL2 or CL3 in-wall rating — a requirement under the Ontario Electrical Safety Authority guidelines for cables inside wall cavities. These in-wall rated cables carry the ARC signal and CEC commands identically to a surface cable; the rating only affects fire safety, not performance. In concrete-wall condos where in-wall routing isn't practical, a slim paintable surface raceway with the HDMI cable inside achieves a similarly clean look without drilling into concrete.
Frequently asked questions about HDMI CEC and wall-mounted soundbars
Can I use CEC with an optical cable connection?
No. HDMI CEC only travels over a physical HDMI connection. An optical cable carries digital audio but has no CEC channel, so switching CEC on in the TV settings does nothing when the soundbar is connected via optical. The fix is to connect the soundbar to the TV's HDMI ARC port with a High Speed HDMI cable — then CEC becomes available immediately.
My soundbar turns on with the TV but the volume buttons don't work. What's wrong?
This usually means the TV's audio output is still set to its internal speakers even though the soundbar is powered on via CEC. Find the TV's Sound Output or Audio Output setting — it is separate from the CEC toggle — and set it to HDMI ARC, ARC, or External Speaker. Once the TV is actively routing audio to the soundbar through the ARC port, the volume commands follow.
Will CEC cause my TV to turn on unexpectedly when a game console wakes up?
It can, because a gaming console waking from sleep sends a CEC power-on command that propagates to the TV and soundbar. Most TVs allow you to disable the auto-power-on portion of CEC while keeping volume and power-off control intact. On Samsung TVs, look for Device Connect inside the Anynet+ menu. On Sony, BRAVIA Sync has separate toggles for power-on and power-off. Leaving power-on disabled while keeping volume CEC active is a reasonable default for a living room setup.
Does CEC work with Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, and Chromecast?
Yes, with a small step on each. Apple TV requires the Home Theater Control setting be turned on (Settings → Remotes and Devices → Home Theater Control → On) and Volume Control set to Auto. Amazon Fire Stick needs HDMI CEC Device Control enabled under Settings → Display & Sounds → HDMI CEC Device Control. Google TV and Chromecast with Google TV enable CEC by default. Once set, the streaming device's remote and the TV remote both control soundbar volume through the same CEC chain.
